18th International Course on Surgical Treatment
of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders

September 21st – 22nd 2012

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are common disorders characterised by pharyngeal vibrations, obstructions, or both. It is well known that this obstruction of the airway has a negative effect on daytime performance, alertness, social setting, morbidity, and mortality.

Currently the gold standard for the therapy of OSA relies on the treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

However, CPAP does not allow for a permanent resolution of respiratory disturbances during sleep because it only suppresses them when using the devices. Therefore, treatment acceptance, adherence, and compliance are mandatory. However, many patients cannot use CPAP. Hence, many patients seek for alternative treatment in case of moderate to severe OSA or as a primary approach in snoring or mild OSA.
Nevertheless, these alternatives are still under debate and reliable scientific data is often lacking.

The aim of our 18th international course on surgical treatment of sleep related breathing disorders is to demonstrate the current surgical technologies and concepts and to critically discuss the therapeutic effects of surgical treatment of snoring and OSA presenting evidence based data supplemented by expert knowledge gained over the last two decades.

During the course participants will get practical knowledge by live surgery of most of the surgical procedures currently in use. Moreover, they can interact with internationally well-known sleep surgeons. There will be tutorials and lectures on indications, technique, medical care, complications and effectiveness of each method. The industrial exhibition will allow to get in touch with manufacturers presenting their most recent developments. Additionally, we try to give an understanding of the history of sleep apnoea surgery as well as an overview on upcoming strategies and recent developments.
